Okra is a warm-weather plant, soaking up full sunshine and thriving in ordinary, well-drained garden soil. Start seeds indoors (4 to 6 weeks before the soil warms) everywhere but the hottest climates, soaking the seeds for 24 hours before planting them. Transplant when night temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees F, spacing the plants 10 to 12 inches apart. Fertilize the soil before planting and again when the plants begin to flower. If you want to pick the fruit for eating, they are ready to harvest when just 3 inches long, or they may be left to mature to their full size if you want to save seed.
