Black Jersey Giant ( Almost Laying ) *************SPECIAL ORDER
These hens will be 3+ months old and will lay in the next few weeks if they aren't already laying.
This chicken is supersized! The Jersey Giant, as its name implies, was developed in New Jersey and is a true giant of the chicken world. Although created as a dual-purpose fowl (valued for both meat and eggs), it isn't used on commercial farms because it takes a year or more for them to grow to full size, whereas commercial strains can reach their desired size as early as 5 weeks of age. The Jersey Giant is good-natured and hens are good brown egg layers. Our favorite trait of the Jerseys is the massive eggs they lay! It's not uncommon for them to not fit in a normal sized egg carton!
How big do Giants get? Giants are the largest purebred chicken. The weight of mature roosters is 11 to 15 pounds and they are usually 22 to 26 inches tall. Mature hens 9 to 11 pounds and usually 16 to 20 inches tall. 2 to 3 times a heavy as most standard heritage breeds. Please don't hesitate to add them to your flock. They fit just fine in or on normal size nesting boxes, roosts and doors.
They mature at 24 weeks and produce 200-225 XXL brown eggs per year.
Laying/Almost Laying age birds typically need to be grown out or have a wait list so they may take several months before they are ready.
