These juveniles will be 6-12 weeks old and are ready to go straight into the coop.
They lay the darkest egg you've seen: a deep, rich, chocolate brown. For those of you who adore hens that lay colorful eggs, this breed is a must-have! Marans make wonderful pets, too - they are hardy, calm and quiet, and bear confinement well. They are said to be good foragers without being TOO destructive to your garden.
We are continually working to further darken our eggs. They are currently a 5/6 and sometimes 8 on the Maran Color Scale! We have found that some of our girls eggs have been getting darker the farther they get into their first laying year and then are the darkest in the start of their second. Once they take a break from laying for some reason ,molt or stress, the dark color will return. Egg colors saturation varies wildly on several different factors such as the individual hen, blood line, feed, stresses and age.
Because we breed these here on the farm we are unable to tell sex until about 3 months. This is one of our most popular breeds and the wait list may be longer than usual. If you are on a specific time line please contact us before ordering.
They mature at 20 weeks and produce 200-275 dark brown colored eggs per year.
Laying/Almost Laying age birds typically need to be grown out or have a wait list so they may take several months before they are ready.
*For those of you interested in showing, these birds come from Painted Eggs and Chicken Scratch Poultry lines but will need to be fine tuned to your liking as we are focused on egg color and not so much on breed standard.*
