In this 4-week program, you’ll get everything you need to hatch eggs and care for baby chicks right at your location.
The experience will begin with a Hand Me Down Farm's poultry expert visiting your group, answering questions, setting up the incubator, and explaining how to use all the tools and supplies provided for your incubating adventure. You will also get a light to be able to see inside the eggs as they develop. When the eggs start cracking and chicks start emerging, your group can watch everything with our high visibility incubator. Once hatched you’ll move them over into our warm brooder, giving them the conditions to thrive – heat, water, and food. For the next week, your group will watch the chicks grow, learning first-hand about the cycle of life. At the end of the 4-week program the chicks can either be adopted or Hand Me Down Farms staff will come to pick up the chicks and hatching kit. The chicks will come back to the farm to be grown out and used as breeders or sold to the public.

Frequently Asked Questions
I've never hatched eggs before. Is it hard? No! Our kit is specifically made for people that have never even seen a chicken before much less already know how to hatch them. We have a day by day, step by step guide portion in the binder that is extremely detailed. On top of that our staff is available 7 days a week from 10am-10pm for ANY question.
What age range is this kit good for? All ages. The activity binder has activities tailored for kids ages 3-15 but we have had churches and adult care facilities thoroughly enjoy the kits. We have been hatching and raising chicks for 10 years and it is still exciting.
How long does it take for the chicks to hatch? The chicks will hatch between 18 and 22 days of incubation.
What do I need to have? A 2ftx2ft space out of direct sunlight and drafts. Water and an outlet. The kit has everything else you need to have a great time!
How many chicks will hatch? You can normally expect 3-5 of the 7 eggs to hatch. If none of the eggs hatch we will either offer to reset your kit or give you a full refund.
How long will we get to keep the chicks after they hatch? One week
What do we do during the 21 days the eggs are incubating? All kinds of stuff! The main thing that can be done is daily candling. It's a great learning experience to watch the embryo as it develops in the egg day by day. If you look close enough you can even see a heart beat on day 6!
How do we see inside the eggs? We provide you with a special flashlight that you place up to the egg in a dark room. With the light lighting up the egg you can see veins, heart beat and as hatch day approaches sometimes eyes and feathers!
What kind of chickens are we going to hatch? We set our kits with what ever breed is having the best hatch rate at the time we drop off your kit.
What happens to the baby chicks?
If you don't want to adopt them then they will come back to our farm and will be offered to other families to buy.
What changes have been made with the COVID-19 outbreak? We used to go in and set up the incubator as well as walking you through the activity book and brooder set up. We will now drop off the kit by your front door and leave. You can wipe the tote down or the entire kit can be left to sit in a protected area for 48hrs to ensure any potential virus is dead. We will walk you through setting up the incubator and answer any questions over the phone. The entire set up phone call takes about 15 minutes. Keep in mind that we are ALWAYS available and are happy to answer any questions.
